Tests can be intimidating. And for some students, adding a timed essay is downright terrifying. Before you immediately say no—or yes—to the optional essay portion, you need to consider which colleges require the SAT essay. Your decision will depend upon where you plan to continue your education.

So what happened? Ten years ago, I started noticing a trend. Teenagers who previously would have been B-average students were receiving higher grades for a similar quality of work. It was not uncommon to meet students that had GPAs in the 4. Apparently, I was not the only one who noticed this trend. Every year US News releases its official college rankings list, its most popular college-related news story. The opposite is actually true.
Some colleges and universities think not. As a result, more and more schools are dropping the SAT essay requirement. Schools that do require the essay feel that strong writing is a good indicator of college readiness and that more information allows them to better evaluate applicants.
Competition for spots at top colleges and universities is stiff. The SAT Essay is optional, but there are several colleges that do require it. Even when not required, students can opt in and use the opportunity to separate themselves from the pack.
