Determined to be a writer from an early age, Winton subsequently studied creative writing at the West Australian Institute of Technology now Curtin University. Several other books followed in the s and he won his first Miles Franklin Award in for The Shallows. He travelled overseas with his wife and young family in the late s, but his work retained a strong attachment to the coastal regions of Western Australia, especially the areas around which he grew up. He returned to Western Australia to purchase a house on the coast and won his second Miles Franklin Literary Award in , for Cloudstreet.

Looking up he sees that the mule is in panic and upon closer inspection sees that she is bleeding. He did not mean to shoot Jenny and quickly realized that she was dying. Though he tries to keep her from dying it is no use, and here one can see that he is regretful and scared and that this would be a good time for him to really start acting as a man and showing maturity and telling people what happened and taking responsibility. Instead he hides the gun and tries to come up with a story about how the mule died even if the story is completely unbelievable. He lies to his boss, his fellow workers, and even his parents though of course no one believed him and eventually dug the truth out of him.
As in this instance, Winton has successfully used setting and structure. In Cloudstreet, the mysterious figure of the Blackfella appears at key points, mostly to Quick. In each occurrence he appears to represent a different meaning or purpose, but there is an overall symbolic representation, and that is of spirituality. Although he appears to be in physical presence, as in where he talks to Quick, the Blackfella has an overwhelming spiritual presence. This is not represented just through aboriginal symbolism — there are also many biblical references when the Blackfella.
