Primary research in my Sediment Geochronology and Seabed Processes group centers on sediment dispersal and the accumulation of fine-grained sediments in continental margin environments. We study the environmental record preserved in marine sedimentary sequences to provide insight into continental margin evolution, human and natural changes, paleoclimate, and paleoseismicity. The formation of marine sedimentary strata rarely results from the simple settling of sedimentary material to the seafloor, but rather from the complex interaction of physical, chemical, and biological processes operating in the marine environment. These processes, such as resuspension and biological mixing, impart characteristic signatures to the sediment and control the burial and preservation of important sedimentary components such as organic carbon and anthropogenic materials. We are investigating the characteristics of recent sedimentary strata on spatial scales ranging from less than a mm to 's of meters and on temporal scales from seconds to 1,'s of years in a variety of continental margin environments.

Majors choose either a general geology or environmental geology track. The Geology Department is a dynamic community of talented students, faculty, and staff. The courses are both intriguing and challenging, and there are ample opportunities for learning and research beyond the classroom. All geology majors pursue an original senior research project and this yearlong endeavor forms an important capstone experience. Many of our students present their research at professional meetings and write up their results for publication. The geology curriculum is designed to provide majors with a strong broad-based education in the modern earth sciences.

Near Crozet, Virginia, five compositionally distinct rock types occur and include: 1 layered gneiss, 2 charnockite and charnockitic gneiss, 3 biotite granitoid gneiss, 4 leucogranite, and 5 megacrystic granitoid. Two distinct foliations, including a high-temperature amphibolite to granulite facies and a low-temperature greenschist facies fabric, are variably developed in rocks with different deformation intensities.
